About this event

Arthur Honegger (1892--1955) composed Le roi David in 1921 for a stage drama by René Morax. The work combines narrated text, soloists, choir, and instrumental ensemble in a form that lies somewhere between an oratorio and musical theatre. Its music brings together archaic elements, French modernism, and liturgically inspired choral writing, and the work has come to occupy an important place in the European sacred music repertoire. The story follows the biblical King David, from his youth as a shepherd and musician in the fields of Bethlehem to his reign as King of Israel. It is a narrative of triumph, doubt, and human vulnerability. In the Christian tradition, David is also associated with the authorship of several of the Psalms, making him a symbolic figure for church music, praise, and worship.
